Our year 9 pupil was set the challenge of making a hot chocolate without using a kettle … or a lighter or a match. He was allowed to use a Kelly Kettle to boil his water. He first watched a demonstration on starting a fire using a firesteel and some tinder card and after listening to the safety briefing, he began his task. He collected kindling and other small pieces of dead wood and, with practise, he was able to carefully light the tinder card. The small pieces of wood were placed over the card and quickly a small fire was established in the bottom of the Kelly Kettle. In no time the water was boiled and it was hot chocolate all around.
